Can a high standard hotel room unit, offer the experience of living in a semi-open space by the water?
High Standard Bioclimatic Ensuite Room Unit in a Summer Holiday Hotel
the Proposal *
The architectural challenge arisen from the open call invitation for Green Hotel Ideas by UIA-ARES Greek Section and Technical Chamber of Greece, led to a proposal that combined traditional and modern bioclimatic cooling strategies with the use of RES such as PV, solar thermal panels and geothermal installation, in order to synthesize a high standard, contemporary hotel room, adjustable to Mediterranean summer climatic conditions.
Room as the basic structural and functional unit of the hotel, is treated as a cell that is self-regulating and adaptable to its micro environment. A sustainable and dynamic interaction is developed between its external boundaries and the climatic stimuli it receives. Space is processed with semi-open qualities and is characterized by the cooling presence of vertical and horizontal water surfaces. At the end, the extroversion of the concept, balances with the room’s centered protected core, the sleeping space, which is provided with extra lighting and temperature controlled filters.
Water reflections and sounds, changing shadow motifs and cooling air streams, make up the final space.
